The Engage Biography Series: Ian Martin
An introduction to our CEO, Ian Martin, in his own words:
“My name is Ian Martin. I am the CEO of Engage Construction Management and Consulting Inc., headquartered in Sherwood Park, Alberta.
After graduating from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario with an Honours Degree in Civil Engineering, I joined Bechtel Canada for the original construction of the Syncrude Oil Sands Plant north of Fort McMurray. This was my first job in heavy construction and I learned a tremendous amount as I had the opportunity to experience both office design work and field engineering over the 4 years I spent with Bechtel. After Syncrude, I moved on to Genstar Construction and was part of the team building the expansion to the Inland Cement Plant on the west side of Edmonton. I had various supervisory and engineering roles on this project and my knowledge base deepened. I also worked for The Foundation Company of Canada on the Genesee Power Plant and the Prince Rupert Grain Terminal construction.
I joined CEDA International in 1987. Over the next 22 years with CEDA, I moved from a Division Manger to a Senior Vice-President. I looked after 8 different divisions of the company providing services ranging from industrial maintenance activities to industrial construction. I had up to 2500 employees working in my divisions, working out of 11 locations in Canada and the USA.
I had known our President, Kevin Kuly for many years before I joined Engage. I mentored Kevin as he started the company and became a significant minority owner when I began full time work with Engage in late 2014. I have enjoyed helping set up the Engage business systems to allow us to move from a small start-up company to a large player in our industry. I am confident that we have the required business procedures in place to support our strong company growth. It has been a pleasure to help Kevin as we continue to grow our company.”
